a name & a blessing//no.2

Nixon Layne Turnbow blessed on October 28, 2012.

Nixon Layne...where did we get that name????  Well it didn't come easy that's for sure.  Because for the first 20 weeks of my pregnancy I was so sure I was having a girl I honestly didn't put much thought into boy names.  But once we found out we were having a boy I was determined to pick out a name asap.  I like deciding on a name as soon as we both can because I hate referring to my baby bump as "baby" or "it".  I had read the name Nixon on a list of baby names and my friend Juli had also suggested it.  And Blaine and I actually agreed we both liked it, wow never thought that would happen.  So there it was our second boy would be named Nixon.  We predicted older generations would hate the name due to the political association that goes with the it, and we were right.  But per usual we didn't care and still decided to go with the name.  Now all we needed was a middle name.  I like middle names to have meaning, but all of the family names weren't flowing with Nixon and we were stumped up until the last few weeks.  Finally I threw out the idea of Layne--a combination of Wayne (Blaine's dad) and Blaine.  And after some convincing (I don't know why there was any discussion really...I thought we agreed he could name one of our kids Kash and I would name everything else in our lives) Blaine was on board with Layne.  And that's how we came up with Nixon Layne.

Nixon's blessing was perfect.  Blaine did a great job and so did Nix.  He didn't even make a peep when his dad raised him to the sky after the blessing like his name was Simba.

One of my favorite things in the world are baby blessings.  I don't even have to know the baby and I will be moved to tears and overwhelmed by the spirit that is in the room.  So you can imaging how I feel about my own children getting blessed.  It's like a dream come true for me to see my husband stand in front of the congregation as a worthy priesthood holder and bless one of our sweet babies, it was such a special day.  I also love that it's just as important to all of our family and they travel and rearrange their schedules to come and celebrate the newest member of the family.

so blessed to have our entire family attend his blessing!
family of four
the spread...this wouldn't have happened without my mom!  I'm so grateful for all she did!!!
It was a great day and we are so lucky to have little Nix in our lives!!!

I tried to snap some shots after the party but really this baby was too tired to be bothered.
He wore Kash's blessing outfit but these booties were my favorite new edition to the ensemble.

Jesus wants me? for a sunbeam

That's right folks my new calling is a Sunbeam teacher!  I've always wanted to be in the primary but actually felt a little overwhelmed when they asked me if I would accept.  Of course I would but in the back of my head I was thinking, "Oh my gosh I don't even know what they do in primary.  How old are Sunbeams?  Why am I excited?" ha  You see I never really went to primary.  I mean from time to time Muttie would make me go (aka show up at my house and say I'm taking you to church...that's why I love her!) and it was so infrequent that each time I went was like the first day of school, awkward and scary.  One of my only memories is standing at the pulpit in front of the congregation for the primary program (why they gave me, an inactive child, a speaking part I'll never understand) and freaking out so much that instead of reading my one line I just started crying and ran off of the stage!  Poor 6 year old me! ha

Luckily my new calling hasn't gone that wrong...yet.  I actually love it!  It's my favorite calling I've ever had...who thought I'd ever love a calling? haha just kidding.  I love being with the kids, I love sharing time and singing time (I'll finally know more than 3 primary songs!), and I love preparing the lessons.

Anyway I figured well if I'm in primary then I better get a "church bag", I mean that's what all of the other primary leaders have :)  Okay so I'll make any excuse to get a new bag.  I looked on etsy and there were some cute bags but I couldn't seem to justify the prices.  So I made my own.  I saw a print with "search, ponder and pray" on it a few weeks ago and it inspired me to make this.  Hopefully the artist doesn't mind I totally copied her design, but I'm not reselling it, is that okay?

I just bought one of those cheap canvas bags from Michael's, covered the handles with some fabric from Hobby Lobby and created the yellow design in Illustrator and printed it on iron-on transfer paper.  It was actually pretty easy and I love it.  Sad thing is I don't think it's big enough and I'm probably going to have to upgrade, but it does the trick for now.

Oh and by the way this new calling means that Blaine has to endure the last few months with Kash for the last two hours of church before he "qualifies" for nursery!  Not gonna lie I'm not crying over that one.  Good luck Blaine!

a name and a blessing

Last Sunday Blaine gave our baby a name and a blessing. It was a prefect blessing, good work Blaine!

After years of Blaine loving the name Kash I thought it would be hilarious if he was inspired to give our baby boy a different name...but he wasn't, so Kash Anderson Turnbow is what he shall be known on the records of our church. Thanks to all of our family that came from all over the country for Kash's big day. Blaine and I were laughing at how people always travel across the country to attend baby blessings and the actual blessing is only a few minutes long. But we are so grateful that you all came and feel so lucky to have such a supportive family!
Sorry you weren't in the picture Smith's! We still love you and we were glad you came too!

move over molly mormon and peter priesthood...there's a whole new generation of mormons in the ward!

A whole new generation that loves to laugh at their own religion...and then blog about it!Have you seen the blog Why Mormon Girls Are Single yet? If not you better check it out right now. Hilarious! Hilarious because it's all true! Similar to this blog that pokes fun at the idiosyncrasies of our religion (and how ridiculous some people are about blogging). This blogger isn't scared to tell how Mormon girls really are and I'm loving every minute of it...but that's probably because I'm married now. And while I can relate to some of the things he writes about I totally validate it by reminding myself that I am married and none of my embarrassing dating moments count anymore!

Funny thing is the annonyms blogger actually has some sound advice. Now only if LDS girls (and guys might I add) would actually take things like this somewhat serious...
